The aging CIE Ra is finally being retired.

For years we have all been sighing for a replacement for the not very accurate CIE General Color Rendering Index, Ra, which is widely used in many regulations, specifications and standards.

With its new statement, CIE PS 002:2025, the CIE finally recommends replacing Ra (CRI) with the CIE General Color Fidelity Index, Rf.
Therefore, Ra should also be replaced in standards and specifications, while possibly referring to Ra (CRI) for a transitional period.

CIE is continuing to work on other aspects of color, such as color preference.

We at Viso Systems are following this development closely. Read more about measuring color, Rf, Rg and many other color properties with a spectrometer-based gonio system here.
